[PC-BSD Testing] Live mode

So, a user in irc was complaining that the live mode wasn't booting
for him and stopping at checking the installer archive. I confess that
I have never tried the live boot on anything without at least 2gb of
RAM. Is it supposed to work with less? He tried on 2 older boxen but I
believe both at 1gb RAM.

It would be easy enough to try different levels of RAM in virtual box
to see what's required...

Well, I'm testing 8.1 "live mode" on virtualbox with 768 MB of RAM, and
it works just fine here...

Not sure why his would hang at "checking installer archive" since that's
what it does for install mode only, live mode skips that check. Is he
pressing option 3 at the boot-splash to run in live mode properly?

If I had to guess though, I would say that if he is trying to use live
mode properly, most likely its hanging when bring up xorg. In live mode
we try to first let xorg auto-detect and use the recommended
driver/resolution/settings, but with each new xorg release we get dozens
of new regressions in ati / intel drivers with failures like this
occurring :(

Kris,

I've increased my liveCD fu a bit since we last worked on PC-BSD. We should
probably touch base a bit to see if any of the new things I've learned would
be useful for PC-BSD.

Sounds good to me! BTW, are you going to be going out to Ohio Linux
Fest, heard a rumor you may be there. If so we can discuss in person if
you like.
